If you are the proud owner of a permanent orthodontic retainer, congratulations! You have taken the leap and now have the beautiful, straight teeth you’ve always wanted. But now that your retainer is in place, how do you keep it clean and looking great? Don’t worry, it’s not as hard as you might think. Here are some tips for keeping your permanent retainer sparkling.

Brush Regularly

It may seem obvious but brushing your teeth regularly is essential for long-term oral health. It’s even more important when wearing a permanent retainer because food particles can easily get stuck in the wires and brackets. Start by brushing gently around each bracket with a toothbrush designed for braces or dentures and then brush normally with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Make sure to brush at least twice daily—once in the morning and once before bedtime—for optimal results.

Floss Daily

Flossing is also an important part of maintaining good oral hygiene when wearing a permanent retainer. Flossing helps remove bacteria and plaque buildup from between your teeth as well as around your brackets and wires. Use waxed dental floss to make it easier to get into tight spaces between your teeth and around your brackets. Alternatively, use a floss threader if necessary to help get into those hard-to-reach spots around your wires and brackets. Make sure to floss at least once daily for the best results!

Rinse with Mouthwash

Using mouthwash after brushing and flossing can help keep bad breath at bay while also killing off any remaining bacteria that may be lurking about in hard-to-reach places around your braces or retainers. Use an alcohol-free mouthwash that has been approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) for best results. Rinse twice daily—once after breakfast, lunch, or dinner; and once before bedtime—for optimal cleaning power!

Cleaning your teeth with a permanent orthodontic retainer doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming; all it takes is a little extra effort every day! With regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash, you can keep your smile looking great while keeping cavities away! So don’t forget to take care of those pearly whites—it will pay off in the long run!
