“Braces set off metal detectors.”

“Treatment takes several years.”

You’ve probably heard of these orthodontic myths, which are simply not true. Today we will highlight a few of these myths and explain the truth behind them…

“I’m too old to consider orthodontic treatment.”

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, nearly 1.5 million adults in the U.S. have braces and about a quarter of all orthodontics patients are of adult age! With the advances being made in technology, no one is too old to have braces or Invisalign.

“I can’t eat my favorite foods.”

While it is true that we recommend those with traditional braces do not eat sticky or chewy foods, most foods can actually be cut into smaller pieces to consume. If you wear Invisalign aligners, you may remove them when you eat or drink anything other than water, so there is no limits on what you can eat.

“Orthodontics will keep me from playing sports.”

If you play sports, you may simply wear an orthodontic mouthguard when participating. There is no reason that braces or Invisalign would stop you from participating in your favorite activities.
