So exciting!! It has been a long time coming, but you’ve finally made it to the point where you are getting your braces taken off. What should you expect? We have put together some information to help you prepare for getting your braces off…

The Braces Removal Procedure

During your removal appointment right here in Pittsburgh, PA, we will gently squeeze the base of the brackets with pliers. This causes the adhesive to break so that the brackets can come off. This is a very gentle process and shouldn’t hurt at all.

After this, we will carefully grind off the bonding cement. This is a lot like getting your teeth polished at the dentist. In fact, as a slight bonus, this process will also whiten your enamel a little.

After Removal of The Braces

Once your braces are completely off, your Pittsburgh orthodontist Dr. Loyacona will take an impression of your teeth and palate. This will be used to create a retainer. When you have your retainer, you should wear it continuously except when you eat. We will provide instructions on when you can cut back on using the retainer.

In total, your appointment should take about an hour. However, this may vary depending on how busy the practice is that day.

Care After Braces

Your Pittsburgh orthodontist Dr. Loyacona, will provide instructions on continued care and will want to have a follow-up appointment later. You should continue to take good care of your teeth, brushing at least twice per day and flossing. Additionally, you should schedule regular dental checkups. Don’t forget to keep wearing your retainer as instructed.
